Unless you are giving away a taste of something truly addictive, that the consumer cannot get somewhere else for free, charging for anything (whether news, images, programs) will not work. Once you have operated on the sustained free and open access model, you cannot start charging unless all of your competitors agree to start charging as well. And even if that miracle happens, people will republish the good bits for free, unless some kind of draconian copyright enforcement can be brought to bear.
